Our NYE was pretty low key. It's an eventful holiday here as all the major hotels were throwing massive parties. The LeMeridien was charging $60 a person to get in which included Egyptian themed dancing and a large multi-cuisine buffet. In a country that is one of the poorest in the world, I was AMAZED at how many people paid for it - not just here but all of the hotels. This one was one of the cheapest and all them usually include a lot of drunk, Indian males. So many that some hotels will only allow couples in. Anyway, we didn't want to spend that much when we could see it all (and hear it) from our room. We decided to try out the regular buffet for dinner as that is our usual Friday night get together. For some odd reason, they decided to
also charge $60 per person for the buffet in the restaurant. Back to no plans now... so we go to the bar in hopes of order some snake food. No food there either - "all the cooks are outside with the party". Alright.. room service it is.
While waiting for our food, it starts pouring outside. And by pouring... I mean
down pouring and suddenly everyone is running for cover. None of the food on the buffet or even the stage (with all the Indian constructed sound system) was covered. I know this sounds terrible of me, but all I could do was laugh. Eventually, they cleared the stage and started the music again as the rain died down and people started reappearing. A few moments later.... another downpour. They just couldn't catch a break. We were so glad that we didn't pay that much when we saw it all and more (the people scrambling in the rain) from the comfort of our hotel room.
