Today is the Hindu holiday of Vishnu - some people celebrated yesterday as well - which signifies the suns transit to the zodiac as per the Indian astrological calendar. The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, which literally means " the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up. The night before, the Hindus set out a display of coins, flowers, fruit, vegetables, rice and other food products. Some even wait to open their eyes in the morning until they are in the same room so their first vision is of the Vishukkani. People also celebrate by wearing new clothes and elders give small amounts of money to younger family members and friends. At the refinery today, they had a display of gifts and offerings set out in the control room for the operators. One of the guys working nights also said one of the managers brought in crisp 10 Rupee bills (50 Rs = $1) and passed them out. Happy Vishu!
